About the Project
GREEN-HET: Developing Skills for Sri Lanka’s Hydrogen Future
GREEN-HET is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education project supporting Sri Lanka’s green
transition through the development of the country’s first Joint Master’s Programme in Hydrogen and
Enabling Technologies (HET). Bringing together four Sri Lankan and four European universities over a
three-year period, the project will build national capacity in hydrogen technologies by combining
curriculum innovation, academic staff development, laboratory modernisation, and strong partnerships with
industry, policymakers and society.
The new master's programme will equip graduates with advanced knowledge and practical skills across the
entire hydrogen value chain, including hydrogen production, storage, transport, distribution and
utilisation, as well as safety, regulation, policy and economic assessment. Delivered through
international collaboration, modern pedagogical approaches, industry engagement and applied research, the
programme will prepare highly qualified professionals capable of supporting the emerging hydrogen sector
in Sri Lanka and beyond.
GREEN-HET will establish sustainable mechanisms for cooperation between higher education institutions,
industry and the public sector, including a National Hydrogen Forum that will serve as a platform for
knowledge exchange, networking and the dissemination of best practices. The project will strengthen
academic and institutional capacities, improve learning and research infrastructure, harmonise educational
standards, and create stronger links between education, research, innovation and labour-market needs.
As a result, Sri Lanka will gain its first coordinated national ecosystem for hydrogen-related education
and capacity building, supported by an international community of expertise and cross-sectoral
collaboration. In the longer term, GREEN-HET is expected to contribute to the implementation of hydrogen
policies, stimulate industrial innovation and entrepreneurship, foster the creation of green jobs, and
support Sri Lanka's and South Asia's transition towards a competitive, resilient and carbon-neutral
economy.
